Day 01 · Shillong
- Day 01
Guwahati to Shillong
Meet at Guwahati airport or station and drive up to Shillong. Evening at Police Bazar and a first taste of the hills.
About three hours. Shillong sits at 1,500 m, a cool change from the plains.
- Day 02
Shillong to Sohra
A slow drive to Sohra with stops at Umiam Lake and the Laitlum canyons. Afternoon at Nohkalikai Falls and the Mawsmai caves.
Sohra is Cherrapunji; carry a rain shell whatever the forecast says.
- Day 03
Down to the root bridges
Descend the steps from Tyrna to Nongriat, cross the double-decker root bridge and swim in the natural pools. Stay the night in the village.
About 3,000 steps each way, down and then up. Start early and go at your own pace.
- Day 04
Nongriat to Mawlynnong
Climb back up to Tyrna, then east to Mawlynnong, among Asia's cleanest villages. Walk the sky walk and the bamboo paths.
The climb out takes two to three hours. Porters can be arranged for bags.
- Day 05
Dawki's clear water
Drive to Dawki on the Bangladesh border for a boat on the Umngot river, clear enough to see the riverbed. Afternoon at the border market.
The light on the river is best before noon, before the wind picks up.
- Day 06
Back to Guwahati
Drive back through Shillong and on to Guwahati for evening flights or the train home.
The drive is five to six hours; book departures after 6 pm.
